About

Flagler Adventure Literature Series

The Flagler Adventure Literature Series is a unique experiential learning initiative within the Department of English that blends literature, environment, and real-world exploration. Through courses like Exploring the American Wilderness and Get Radical: The Literature and Culture of Surfing, students move beyond the traditional classroom to engage directly with the landscapes they study.

This innovative program is rooted in place-based learning, where students deepen their understanding of literature by experiencing the environments that shape it. Whether backpacking through the mountains or surfing along the coast, students connect readings to lived experiences in powerful and lasting ways.

Unlike most academic offerings, these courses combine intellectual, physical, and personal growth. Students read authors who explore themes of wilderness, identity, and environment, then test those ideas through immersive experiences that challenge their perspectives and expand their understanding of the world.

Our Roar and Raise Goal

Our Roar and Raise goal is to raise $2,500 to support experiential learning opportunities within the Adventure Literature Series.

Our Fundraising Priorities

Your support will help expand and enhance this transformative program by funding:

• Travel and logistics for immersive field experiences
• Equipment and supplies for outdoor learning
• Expansion of new course offerings, including trips to the Everglades and barrier islands
• First-year experience programming that builds strong student connections

Why Your Support Matters

Your gift helps make these life-changing experiences accessible to more students.

With your support, we can:

• Remove financial barriers to participation in field experiences
• Strengthen connections between classroom learning and real-world environments
• Foster personal growth, resilience, and confidence in students
• Create meaningful, shared experiences that build community and belonging

These courses do more than teach literature. They help students discover new perspectives, challenge themselves, and better understand their place in the world.

Expanding the Experience

The Adventure Literature Series continues to grow, with plans to introduce new courses and destinations that deepen student engagement and expand opportunities for exploration. These experiences are especially impactful for first-year students, helping them build lasting connections and a strong sense of belonging from the start of their college journey.

Thank You!
